נולדה וגדלה בחיפה, ישראל. חיה הלר דגני גילתה את הזכוכית לאחר שעבדה שנים רבות בחינוך. היא קיבלה את הדוקטורט שלה מאוניברסיטת תל אביב בשנת 2003. עבודת הדוקטורט שלה נכתבה על HomeSchooling בישראל. היא חיה חמש שנים באיטליה ובמקסיקו, מקומות שהם מקור ההשראה ליצירותיה. היא שואבת את השראתה מהתרבויות השונות אותן הכירה במסעותיה, מהסיפורים, האגדות, הדמויות שפגשה, הנופים הקסומים. היא מצאה את יציקות הזכוכית ואת שיטת השעווה האבודה מעניינות ביותר, המאפשרות לה ליצור עבודות תלת מימדיות המביאות לידי ביטוי את עולמה הפנימי.
