“Women”
This pieces portraying children seemingly napping calmly, but each is clearly hurt in some manner. This series is influenced by Herman Hesse’s book, “Under the Wheel” which describes how putting the needs of the establishment at the forefront causes the death of a child who is unable to cope with coercion.
The youngsters put their trust in us, the adults. With an innocent gaze they accept our words, and put themselves in our hands without fear – but we betray their trust and naiveté, exerting power-minded manipulations based on interests.
“Woman is not born a woman – she becomes a woman,” said Simone de Beauvoir in 1949. John Lennon sang in 1980 that “woman is the nigger of the world.”
Femininity is a product of social processes and structures that define how a woman exists and functions in the private and public space. Even today, gender hierarchy exists, even if there is more awareness and attempts to create gender equality.
